Falling for Fall

I know we have a few days left until autumn is truly here, but it sure feels like summer just called it quits here in Portland. A rainy weekend and a forecast that shows cloudy skies and cooler weather have me ready to snuggle up and fully embrace this fall thing.

Now, maybe the weather isn’t the most exciting thing to talk about, but remember that I grew up in the desert. There are really only two seasons in the desert: hot and grab a jacket. If you look outside the window from your climate controlled house, you usually can’t tell if its 100F or 50 F outside; it always looks the same. So for this girl to experience her first changing of seasons since early childhood is super exciting.

The leaves are just starting to change and it feels like magic is happening. I’ve only seen these bright reds and oranges in photos in recent years. My memories of the leaves falling from trees are those of an excited kid ready to jump in and crunch away. So many people are sad to see the summer go and the rain is often talked about with dread in these parts. Perhaps I’m going into this season change too optimistic, but I’ve had 20 years of too much summer, and I’m looking forward to the change with the same excitement and exhilaration of that kid and her pile of leaves.
